Phone Messages

Ok I realized what I'm really insecure about yesterday...leaving phone messages.

I had to call an acquaintance whom I hadn't talked to since we'd moved out to Seattle and back in October.  I'd been meaning to call her for quite awhile, but hadn't gotten around to it.  Now it seemed awkward to tell her "Hi we've been back for 7 months, but this is the first time I'm calling you."  I don't know why I procrastinate, it only makes things more difficult.

Anyway, I picked up the phone and called her.  I listened anxiously to the ringing.  Before I could prepare a message in my head, her answering machine beeped.  It was waiting for a reply.  I awkwardly stumbled through my words.

"Uh, hi, just wanted to let you know we're back, give us a call and uh we can have a chat."

I glanced up at my daughters and they were rolling with laughter.  With all my strength, I suppressed my own laugh.

"Our number is still....." I had to stop, take a deep breath, and focus "...uh ###-####".  Finally I finished the message and hung up.  I must have sounded like a moron.  We laughed until we cried....and I cursed the answering machine.

Have a great weekend!

Kathy :)

  1. I hate leaving messages! And you're right, it's worse when you've put it off a long time. At least it gave your family a good laugh.

  5. I'm not the greatest at leaving messages either. My mother was standing next to me one time when I was talking to someone's answering machine, and after I hung up, she said I had used my "fake" voice. I can't even sound like myself when I leave messages!

  6. Yeah, if I go to voice mail, I typically hang up and send a text message instead. However, I love getting voice messages from people, so go figure.

  12. Alex- I'm afraid I give my family too many good laughs.

Kate- She did call back and she was very sweet. She didn't even mention how silly I sounded.

Miranda- Sometimes I actually forget my number, that's really embarrassing.

Melanie- Sometimes I wish the machine would just cut me off!

Dana- That's funny, I think my voice goes to a higher pitch when I leave messages.

McKenzie- I really prefer email and texting to the phone!

Michael- I wish people do that for me!

Lynn- I wish everyone used texting, that would clear up the problem entirely.

JE- I do that sometimes too.

    Reiko- THX!

Stephen- I need a cone of silence while I'm leaving messages so nothing else distracts me. :)
